Heavy rains causing some flooding in areas have forced several roads such as Shaulis Road between Highway 18 and the casino, Ranchero Road, and Fletcher Avenue to close.
Crews are working quickly to secure the flood gates on Fletcher Avenue near University, bringing in large loads of sand bags to reinforce the bottom of the gate.
People living nearby know the creek flooding is a part of living in the area. But one long time Waterloo resident can't remember it ever happening in December.
"This usually happens in the summer or spring time, " said Sharon Clark, who lives next to the flood gates.
"This is very unusual for December," said Waterloo Public Works Director Mark Rice. "We are usually in the midst of plowing snow, and now we are sand bagging and preparing to close the gates on Fletcher, just to make sure the public is safe."
The flood gates are meant to keep drivers off flooded roads and safe, but with drivers missing the closed sign, it is causing a different kind of traffic hazard.
In a 30 minute period more than two dozen cars made the mistake. In some cases almost causing wrecks.
Clark says she sees it happen all the time.
"Even with the street blocked, people would still turn, and I think, you have to turnaround and come right back," said Clark.
It is a major thoroughfare for Waterloo, but public works says they don't mind inconveniencing people when it comes to safety.
The flooding could have been a lot worse in areas, but thanks to warm weather the ground isn't frozen at this point and was able to absorb most of the rain fall.
Public works says the creek should recede by the end of this week.
