DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Broomball leagues may be coming to Dubuque soon thanks to a Dubuque Racing Association Grant.

The Mystique Community Ice Center received a $2,812 grant that they'll use to purchase broomball goals, sticks and balls.

Broomball is a game played on an ice rink, but players don't wear skates.  They hit a ball around with modified sticks (called brooms) and work to score goals, similar to hockey.

“With the purchase of new broomball equipment we look to offer a new fun recreational activity. This grant will allow us to improve our operations and better serve our customers," said Ron Breitbach, general manager of the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Breitbach says they hope to organize a tournament in either January or February, and hopes that will launch enough interest to start leagues.  He said they'll most likely promote the program at local colleges, saying that other colleges intramural broomball leagues are usually among the most popular programs offered.

He also said they want to introduce the game to the younger students, too.

No date has been set for any tournaments or leagues.
