DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

It's a place to honor those who served the country, but someone  has vandalized the Veterans Memorial Plaza in Dubuque.

"Someone came in here with a vehicle and went around and moved all six of these benches.  Destroying this one...and causing damage to all the others," said Veterans Memorial plaza Vice President, Dick Bridges.

Police say it happened some time between Saturday night and Sunday early afternoon.

The tire marks from the car visibly on the ground.  A bench in honor of two local veteran brothers...now destroyed.

Bridges, who's an Air-Force vet and worked to make the plaza a reality -- holds back tears thinking of all the effort and hard work put into plaza over the past seven years.

"Wow...this has been a dream...a wonderful part of my life," added Bridges.

A pillar also knocked over during the vandal's driving spree -- leaving red paint from the car on the monument.

It seems to have struck a cord with people in the Dubuque community.  Some have been driving by, getting out of their cars, to see what exactly happened.

"Irritated by it because whoever did this obviously doesn't have the respect that we hold for veterans and what they have done for this country," said Army Veteran Louis Pfeiler.

Police say they have some leads, but are still looking for the car that did this. They are looking for a dark colored, older model SUV like a Jeep Cherokee, or similar to that style.

They ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-747-0117 or 563-588-0714.

For now, the plaza's board of directors say they're working to figure out how to fix what's been damaged.

It's estimated to cost $15,000.

Police are investigating an incident of vandalism at the Dubuque Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Lt. Mike Schmidt says someone drove through the plaza area, located at East 16th Street and Kerper Boulevard, possibly between Saturday night and Sunday early afternoon.

Benches are destroyed, including a small pillar.

Police say they are looking for a red car because paint transfer was left behind.

They'll also be looking at surveillance cameras in the area.

Damages are estimated to cost $15,000.
