Officer Assaulted During Robbery Arrest

Posted: Updated:

A Cedar Falls Police Officer is in the hospital after an early morning assault.

Michael Myers allegedly charged the officer as he was getting out of his police car near the College Square Manor on Boulder Drive, behind the Hy-Vee store.

Myers started his day at the grocery store.
While eating his way through the store, Hy-Vee employees approached him.
That's when he assaulted two workers, leaving one with a bloody lip, before rushing out of the store.

Myers ran just a couple blocks away to the College Square Manor apartment complex where he is a resident.

Cedar Falls Police were searching for him there, when Myers tried get into one of the cop cars.
That's when Cedar Falls Police Officer Nick Puls spotted him.

"The assault lasted about 10 seconds. He took Officer Puls to the ground and was striking him in the head when the other officer tased him and got him off."

With so many recent officer involved shootings, KWWL asked if this assault could have escalated to that.

"Every situation that we get into, where violence is involved, is very dynamic and it happens very quickly. The officers have to use their best judgment. Whether this would have proceeded to that is difficult to tell. Thankfully it did not."

Myers' neighbors say they are not close with him.
His neighbors tell KWWL he was very strange, kept to himself for the most part, and is unemployed.

The extent of Officer Puls' injuries are unknown at this time.
According to Police, Myers is charged with robbery and assault.
Authorities say Myers has a lengthy police record, including arrests for drug and theft charges.
