IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The  Iowa football team is heading to the Rose Bowl and fans are anxious to get tickets.

The Hawkeyes will take on Stanford on New Years Day.

The university has 22,000 tickets available and expects to sell them all.

A long line of fans waited outside of the ticket office this afternoon.

"We'd been trying to get the Rose Bowl tickets and our computer was so jammed up we couldn't get through so I said I'm going down, I'm not going to miss out on getting tickets," said Phyllis Eaves, a Hawkeye fan.

Everything is being done online, even for fans who go to the ticket office.

The university is currently taking orders from season ticket holders, others can go online and join a waiting list for the remaining tickets.

Fans tell us after last year's season they never would have thought they'd be lined up for Rose Bowl tickets this year.

"We were just hoping to be above water so to speak and you know things will improve over time so it's all good now," said Mitch Hermston, a Hawkeye fan.

Going to the Rose Bowl is something Iowa fans don't want to miss out on.

"The Rose Bowl is the granddaddy of them all, I don't think we could have hoped for anything better than that so all along I've been hoping we would go to the Rose Bowl," Brian Decoster told us.

Excitement is easy to find in Iowa City, in fact HyVee delivered 4,000 roses to campus this afternoon.

The deadline to apply for tickets is Thursday, however the university will continue to sell tickets as long as they are available.

Tickets from the university start at $150.

To give you an idea of how in demand the Rose Bowl tickets are, StubHub is currently selling tickets for more than $500, compared to around $140 on the website for the Orange Bowl playoff game between Clemson and Oklahoma.
