INDIANAPOLIS (KWWL) -

In a game that featured two stellar defenses, it was a late 4th quarter touchdown that decided the game.

After C.J. Beathard hit Tevaun Smith for an 85-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, Michigan State answered back with an impressive drive of their own, and punched in a late touchdown to seal the Big Ten Championship over the Iowa Hawkeyes, 16-13.

Michigan State out-possessed Iowa, holding onto the ball more than 36 minutes, to Iowa's 23 minutes. The wear in Iowa's defense was evident on the Spartan's last drive of the game, as Michigan State's last drive lasted more than 9 minutes, and L.J. Scott punched it in from a yard out to put the Spartans up 16-13.

Iowa's usually dominant rush offense was held to just 53 yards, while the Spartans racked up nearly 200 yards on the ground.

Michigan State also forced two turnovers, including an interception in the endzone that halted an impressive Iowa drive.

A win for Michigan State virtually guarantees them a berth in the College Football Playoff.

Iowa's fate will be decided tomorrow on Selection Sunday.
