Ottumwa cemetery board selling rental houses

Posted: Updated:

The city of Ottumwa's cemetery board is getting out of the real estate business.

The board is selling houses it had rented for decades.

The houses were bought in the 1970s as part of a cemetery expansion plan.

But the city soon realized it had enough cemetery space without tearing down the houses.

Ottumwa Parks Director Gene Rathje says the city has already sold a house at 317 E. Park Ave. Now, it's looking to sell others.

That includes a 1930 home at 343 E. Park Ave., distinctive for southwestern style.

Rathje said the home will be listed Monday at $70,000.

Rathje says the board hopes to build a new cemetery office and shop space with the profits from the home sales.
