Bike-friendly projects funded in central Iowa through grants

Posted: Updated:

Central Iowa is making a push for bicycle transportation, using a new round of grant dollars.

New plans include bicycle parking spaces and lanes in central Iowa communities.

Organizers say $75,000 in grants through the Wellmark Foundation will fund six street projects in Des Moines, Windsor Heights, Carlisle and Johnston.

The projects include turning three street vehicle parking spots on Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines into bike corrals and more bike parking spots in Windsor Heights.

The city of Carlisle will create its first bike-friendly lane on South Fifth Street with a nearly $15,000 grant.

In Johnston, another $15,000 will be used to extend a trail and provide safe crossing of Northwest 60th Avenue.
