Iowa police learn body camera video storage comes at price

CORALVILLE (AP) -

It's been a year since the Coralville Police Department first outfitted its officers with body cameras, and now the department is struggling with how to store the vast amount of video footage.

The Coralville City Council recently authorized more than $18,000 for the police department to upgrade its computer servers and purchase additional digital storage space for its body and dash camera data.

Police Chief Barry Bedford says new hard drives are necessary, because the department significantly underestimated how much storage space would be needed to retain video data for the long term.

He says Coralville's 33 officers upload an average of about 70 videos per day.
