Olympic Village utilities planned as part of Rio 2016 budget cuts

RIO DE JANEIRO (NBC) -

The organizers of next year's Olympic Games in Brazil are making deep budget cuts -- cuts that the athletes will be able to feel.

Olympic officials announced this week that among the more than half a billion dollars in reductions will be money for air conditioning in the bedrooms at the Olympic Village.

Some 10,500 athletes are expected in Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 games, which will take place during the Brazilian winter. But Rio has a warm climate, and unless someone steps up to pay for A-C, the athletes will have to do without.

Olympic organizers are cutting more than one-fourth of the $1.9 billion operating budget. The economies are part of what games organizers call finding "fat" and cutting it.

A spokesman for the Rio games said that large cuts are necessary to balance the budget.
