Muslim students ask for prayer space at Iowa colleges

Muslim students at Iowa's three public universities are asking for a permanent prayer space.

Muslim students at the University of Northern Iowa say it's very important they pray five times a day. It's considered a sin if they do not.

But that is very hard to  do because there's no place on campus open throughout the day that they can go to.

Undergraduate Nadir says he either has to pray at home or drive from here to the Islamic Center in Waterloo in order to pray.

He and his friends even bought a car so they would not miss prayer time.

Some students have to resort to praying in a corner in the hallway or the library so they don't miss class.

Now UNI does have a room Muslim students can go to for prayer.

Students at UNI along with Iowa State and the University of Iowa are asking for a permanent space open throughout the day that students can easily access...

UNI staff told KWWL the administration is looking into this and working with the students.
