WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The citizens of Waterloo have spoken, electing Quentin Hart as mayor. Hart beat former mayor Tim Hurley Tuesday night.

It was a special moment for the man born and raised in Waterloo.

"There are no papers in kindergarten that you can go back and look to see to say I wanted to become mayor," said Hart.

Hart says he's happy and blessed. He even made history, becoming the first African American mayor in Waterloo but he doesn't want to focus on that.

"You know I'm African American. I'm proud of who I am but my goal is to become the best mayor of this entire city," said Hart.

Although the last few hours for Hart have been a whirlwind, he's been thinking about the future of this city for a while now.

Hart ran on five different platform issues, with safer streets as number one. He believes it will be important to build that trust between the law enforcement and the community.

"Because right now we only see particular law enforcement when there's a response to a crime situation, but trying to be a little bit more proactive in our engagement with our community, expanding community policing, working with our police chief," said Hart.

Hart also stressed for things to change it's going to be a community wide effort.
