Emma turns 111

As of Wednesday, the oldest-living person on record is 122 years old.

Meanwhile, possibly the oldest person in Iowa turns 111 on Wednesday.

On her birthday Sumner Super Centenarian, Emma Hough, looks back on her life as teacher and world traveler.

Emma Hough of Sumner was born on farm in Fayette County.

She is Upper Iowa's oldest graduate, a former wife and PE teacher, and before coming to live at Hillcrest Assisted Living more than 10 years ago, she was a world traveler, and recalled her favorite trip to Hawaii.

"Oh I loved that. I went twice. I went to Alaska twice, and all over the United State, and a part of Europe," Emma said.

Now, Emma says she enjoys exercising, playing Bingo, and spending time with her best friend and caretaker, Bonnie Seehase.

"She's a nice person.  She and I never knew each other until I came here, so I put her in as my POA. She has managed everything for me. She's been right on the spot," Emma said.

"It's been over 30 years we've been friends. We've been loyal friends, we've done a lot of things together, a lot of things we probably shouldn't have done, but she's an amazing woman," Seehase said.

Not only is Emma the only person more than 100 years old right here in assisted living, but the people here at Hillcrest say she's the oldest person they've ever seen.

"Just to see her is unreal, and to put that 111 years on her," Bonnie said.

According to Hillcrest Assisted Living caretakers, a special party is planned for Emma during the weekend.
