Grassley announces results of drug company investigation

A pill priced at $1,000 raises red flags.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley began asking questions.

The Iowa Republican and a Democrat from Oregon are sharing the results of an 18-month investigation into the pricing and marketing of the Hepatitis C drug "Sovaldi."

"The evidence shows that the company pursued a calculated scheme for pricing and marketing its Hepatitis C drug based on one goal, maximizing revenue regardless of the human consequences," said Senator Ron Wyden.

"What I believe we learned from our work is that the marketplace lacks appropriate signals of three key components: payers have a limited opportunity to know the price, the volume and the efficacy of a new drug entering the market," said Grassley.

Grassley's office says Iowa faces a lot of pressure on their medicaid programs over the cost -- struggling with wanting to give patients access to a landmark treatment -- and questioning how much taxpayers could afford.
