IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Iowa City Police Department will host "Coffee with a Cop" -- a 2 hour event starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday, December 11th at Daylight Donuts on E. Court Street.

The event is part of a national initiative with the mission is to build trust between police officers and the community, one cup of coffee at a time.

Coffee with a Cop invites police and community members to come together in an informal, neutral space to talk about community issues, build relationships and enjoy coffee.

Because some people feel that officers don't always seem approachable, or they interact with them during situations that make it difficult to build relationships, Coffee with a Cop will provide the opportunity to break down communication barriers.

Coffee with a Cop will also provide a unique experience in which people of the community can ask police officers questions and learn more about the department's work in the Iowa City area.

Nationally, Coffee with a Cop has helped participants better understand their local law enforcement and have had a more positive opinion of police.

Officer David Schwindt can be contacted for more information on Coffee with a Cop at david-schwindt@iowa-city.org or 319-356-5275.
