Ted Cruz addresses serious issues in Coralville

CORALVILLE (KWWL) -

Presidential candidate Ted Cruz was in Coralville this morning.

He addressed many serious topics allowing people to put him on the spot and ask questions.

Cruz says he loves Iowa because Iowans take politics seriously.

"Yal treat politics the way Texans treat football, although let's be clear this year you're awfully good at football too," Cruz told the crowd.

"I am right here today predicting a National Championship of Iowa vs. Clemson," he added, referring to the undefeated Iowa Hawkeye football team.

He addressed topics from education to nuclear weapons, even speaking to us afterward about the recent Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado.

"This man is a deranged murderer, we don't know yet what his motivations were although we can see the press eagerly salivating to suggest that this particular murderer might have been a republican," said Cruz.

He went on to say he is pro life and that means every life including the police officer and innocent people who were killed.

We asked Senator Cruz directly for his stance on bringing Syrian refugees into the United States.

"They ought to be re-settled in the Middle East in majority Muslim countries and we should not be bringing in individuals, we don't know if they're terrorist."

He said he is encouraged by the many governors saying no to Syrian refugees.

Iowa governor Terry Branstad has said he does not want Syrian refugees coming to Iowa.

Senator Cruz had plans to stop in Clinton and Bettendorf this afternoon following his stop in Coralville.
