Iowa city and county consider shared law enforcement center

CHARLES CITY (AP) -

Officials in Charles City and surrounding Floyd County are considering a shared law enforcement center to serve their northern Iowa communities.

The city council and county board of supervisors held their first joint meeting last week.

Supervisors Chairman Doug Kamm says the need for a new jail has been talked about for several years.

The 74-year-old jail is on the fourth floor of the courthouse, which also houses the sheriff's office.

According to state jail inspectors, the facility does not meet the needs of the staff or public.

Councilman Jerry Joerger says having the sheriff's office and the police department in the same building would be more efficient, since they could share interview rooms.
