ESPN report names Toledo's Matt Campbell as next ISU football coach

Posted: Updated:

According to a report from ESPN early this morning, Iowa State is set to announce a new football coach.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reports that current Toledo Rockets head coach Matt Campbell will take over the helm of the Cyclones program, according to sources. The report also notes that Campbell could be in Ames as soon as this afternoon for an official announcement.

Campbell has found success at Toledo, where he's guided the Rockets to a 35-15 record over four seasons. Toledo is currently ranked No. 24 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

If hired, Campbell would replace Paul Rhoads, who coached his final game with Iowa State yesterday after being told he wouldn't return for 2016 this week. The Cyclones concluded their 2015 season with a 30-6 loss to West Virginia Saturday to finish with a 3-9 record.

Iowa State has not confirmed the reports of Campbell's possible hiring, nor has a press conference been announced.

Stay with KWWL for the latest on the situation throughout the day.
