DUBUQUE (TH MEDIA) -

A leading infectious disease specialist in Dubuque is set to retire later this year.

Dr. John Viner, who works at Dubuque Internal Medicine, will retire next month after 37 years practicing in the community.

Dr. Viner headed Dubuque's efforts to combat AIDS during the 1980s. He also helped the community prepare for diseases like SARS and Ebola.

Dr. Viner has served for 30 years on the Dubuque County Board of Health and is the City of Dubuque's health adviser.

Dr. Patricia Quinlisk, medical director of Iowa Department of Public Health, calls Viner one of the "prominent infectious disease doctors here in the state."

Viner began practicing at Dubuque Internal Medicine in 1979.

His last day will be Dec. 18.
