Study: Obesity in early adulthood could lead to long-term heart damage

BOSTON (NBC) -

Extra weight early in adulthood may lead to heart damage in the long run -- even if people eventually end up shedding those extra pounds.

A new study from Harvard Medical School examined data on more than 72,000 women, who were followed and monitored for three decades. Women who were overweight or obese at age 18 had a higher risk for sudden cardiac death throughout the study.

That risk held regardless of whether they eventually slimmed down.

A comprehensive study on the subject will be published in the journal JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology.
