JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -
Two men face charges tied to a shooting in Johnson County in early November.
Iowa City Police say Sergio Martinez, 19, showed up to Mercy Hospital on November 1 with gunshot wounds to both of his legs; complaints say Martinez told officers he was out for a walk when he was randomly shot multiple times by "black males" who he didn't know.
Investigators eventually determined that story wasn't true, and that Martinez was actually the passenger in Jonathan Aragon Salas Jr.'s car, and Aragon Salas, 21, shot Martinez in the legs.
Criminal complaints say the two were driving and Aragon Salas took the ammo clip out of a pistol, pointed the gun at Martinez's legs in the passenger seat and pulled the trigger. That's when the gun fired and the bullet went through both of Martinez's legs.
Because Martinez allegedly filed a false report with police, officers immediately thought there was a concern for public safety and they went searching for shooters; complaints say officers spent several hours investigating and looking for a shooter they believed was at-large in the community.
Martinez was booked in the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday evening for filing a false report;  Aragon Salas was booked a few hours later for reckless use of a firearm causing serious injury.
