United Airlines will let travelers purchase in-flight Wi-Fi with flier miles

United Airlines plans to let travelers use their frequent-flier miles to pay for in-flight Wi-Fi.

The second-largest U.S. airline is testing a web portal on select flights that allows passengers to access the internet on their laptops, tablets and smartphones.

United says supply and demand will factor into pricing -- meaning the amount of flier miles needed for Wi-Fi would rise as more people attempt to connect and speeds diminish.

United hopes to roll out the web portal to most of its U.S. domestic flights by early 2016.
