Largest support pier of old San-Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is imploded

SAN FRANCISCO (NBC) -

Implosions are somewhat of a common occurrence in this day in age, but one in San Francisco bay this weekend was truly unique -- because it was underwater.

It took just six seconds to implode the largest support pier of the old San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Saturday morning.

The pier is about as tall as a five-story building and weighs 20-million pounds. It took about 20-thousand pounds of dynamite to bring it down.

Scientists also took great care to keep wildlife out of the danger zone. Monitors used air horns to scare birds and sea lions away, and barges outfitted with underwater air compressors created an air bubble curtain to try and soften the impact of the blast on fish.
