IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The University of Iowa raised the minimum wage for employees on November 1 when the new rate when into place in Johnson County.

Minimum wage employees now get paid $8.20 an hour.

According to a university spokesman, about three dozen temporary employees and 665 student employees are paid minimum wage.

At one point a university employee had said they weren't sure whether the university would have to participate, since the university is a state agency.

The minimum wage in Johnson County is increasing to $10.10 an hour by 2017. Cities are able to opt out, if they choose to.
