Hearing on Iowa oil pipeline

Posted: Updated:

There's been a lot of debate about a new oil pipeline.

If approved, the proposed Bakken Pipeline would run through 18 counties in Iowa.

This new pipeline would carry crude oil across the state and into Illinois.

Last night both supporters and opponents of the pipeline met in Boone, Iowa, debating whether or not it should be approved.

Supporters say this is a very reliable way to transport oil across the state.

They also say this project will create an additional 4,000 jobs while the pipeline is constructed.

Some even believe their lives are at risk if it does not pass. Opponents say this would only create temporary jobs.

They are also concerned about environmental disasters. The new pipeline would carry nearly half a million gallons of crude oil underneath Iowa farmland.

This controversial proposal began nearly a year ago.

Dakota Access, a company from Texas, proposed creating the crude oil pipeline.

A decision might be made by the end of this year. Both those for and against the pipeline say it will have an  immediate effect on Iowa.
