Wartburg professors react to budget cuts

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

Declining enrollment at Wartburg College in Waverly is forcing them to cut some positions. College president Darrel Colson announced Wednesday they will be cutting three faculty members in the departments of Art, English & Modern Languages, and Religion & Philosophy.

Throughout the process several students have shown their support, even in the form of protests.

"The thing I wanted to do was support all faculty because everyone is going through a hard time," said Hannah Creed, student.

The college goes through a review process every year. Due to declining enrollment, this year tough decisions were made.

"It can be hard though for the general public to separate that sometimes because they might look at an individual and think this is a fantastic person who does wonderful work why would their position be eliminated.  When simply it comes down to an issue of need," said Graham Garner, campus spokesperson.

Professor Erik Grayson was one of the professors cut. He says he's so proud of the support he's received, from students and fellow faculty members.

"For every day that I've had doubt about my abilities in the classroom, I can now turn to what I've received as this gift from my students in the form of support," said Grayson.

Those people cut will have an opportunity to teach one more year at Wartburg.
