IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Member of Veterans for Peace gathered today to hold a peace protest in front of the Pentacrest on the University of Iowa's campus.

The veterans said it may be the most ironic protest many people will ever see, as they believe civilians are more likely to be victims of war than soldiers.

"It is fine to honor veterans for their service. It's fine to remember soldiers who have passed away," Veterans for Peace member Ed Flaherty said. "[but] there's been civilians killed in every country in the world... this is not what veterans want."

Veterans for Peace, which has existed nationwide since 1985, works to educate the public on the true cost of war.

"We work for peace," Flaherty said. "We work with other organizations who have similar goals."

The purpose of the organization's Veteran's Day peace protest is to end war and call attention to peace,.

Flaherty said rallies like the one in Iowa City happen all over the country every year on Veteran's Day, and are held by Veterans for Peace and other similar organizations.
