Wartburg College decides to make faculty cuts

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

Wartburg College President, Darrel Colson, announced the college will not reappoint three of their faculty members based on a decision through their institutional need review process.

The following statement was sent out to faculty, staff and students from Colson:

“Our annual examination of institutional need for tenure-track positions has concluded, and, because so many of you have expressed both interest and concern, I wanted to share the results with you.

“On the basis of recommendations I’ve received, I have decided not to renew appointments to three positions, one each in the Departments of Art, of English & Modern Languages, and of Religion & Philosophy. In accord with policy, the faculty members in those positions have been offered an opportunity to continue teaching at Wartburg through the 2016-17 academic year.

“I want to thank all of those who have advised me, both officially and unofficially. I have been grateful for the outpouring of support, particularly from students and former students. As I communicated both verbally and in writing, I carefully and prayerfully pondered the messages that you sent to me. I already shared the sadness that you feel, but those messages speak so eloquently of beloved teachers and mentors that they deepened my own sense of loss.

“While I’m not announcing the outcome that so many of you desired, I do hope that current students will seize the opportunity to study under these splendid faculty members at some time during the next three semesters. And, to those of you who have expressed concern about particular majors, minors and other academic programs, I want to reassure you that we intend to continue to offer the programs in which you are enrolled, certainly for the duration of your time here at Wartburg.

“I regret disappointing any of you with these decisions, but I celebrate, with gratitude, the passion that I feel from Wartburgers, for I know that that passion is the firm foundation on which the College’s future depends.”
