DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The new University of Iowa president says the school must be willing to change what are viewed as its strengths in order to remain successful and competitive.

The Des Moines Register reports that President Bruce Harreld talked during a television interview Tuesday of respecting the university's institutional culture but also said it must adapt to future challenges and opportunities. He made his remarks for Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press" program.

Critics have said the former IBM executive is unqualified for the position, given his lack of university administrative experience.

Harreld spoke Tuesday of changes he thought necessary during his years with IBM and said, "You actually need to shift all of the practices, policies, procedures and culture . to be in support of the future, not the past."
