IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An investigation continues and a suspect is in custody following multiple reports of sexual assault on the University of Iowa campus.

The first Hawk Alert came Tuesday morning, then another followed in the afternoon.

All the alerts happened within 24 hours, and school spokesman Tom Moore says there was a very active police effort to find the man responsible.

"Less than 24 hours is a little alarming," said Ashley Meade, a nursing student. "A lot of my friends were shocked, we were talking about it in a group chat saying how scary it was."

The reports came from near the University Hospital and main library -- saying a man was groping women.

Meade says she's afraid to walk alone.

"I feel like no matter how many girls you walk with, you never really feel safe," she said.

Authorities say they believe the same man is responsible for all the reported sexual assaults.

Moore says it's unclear whether the man, described to be in his 30's, is a student.

As night fell on campus, the man's actions still weighed on students minds.

"I think that it's scary they were all so close together," said sophomore Elaine Meyers.

Meyers admits she hates walking alone on campus, although she believes the University does go to great lengths to make students feel safe.

"I think they do a lot as is so it'll be interesting to see what steps they do to help this," said Meyers.

Students were given the all-clear around 2:40 Tuesday afternoon.

The man accused of groping women is in custody.

According to the Office of Strategic Communication, "the subject was involuntarily committed to UIHC and charges are still pending. UI police are not releasing the name of the subject at this time, pending further investigation."

Michelle Corless contributed to this report.
