Waterloo council denies exemption for brush pile burning

Posted: Updated:

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- Waterloo officials won't make a rare exemption to city ordinances and allow the burning of a big brush pile.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that the City Council voted 5-1 on Monday against a request by Con-Trol Container Systems to burn the 30-foot-wide pile next month.  Waterloo Chief of Fire Services Pat Treloar had recommended denial of the request.

Con-Trol's Chris Hesse says it's likely the material now will be moved outside city limits for burning.

The city has banned burning brush, leaves and other yard waste for 13 years. Council members traditionally have rejected requests from businesses looking to burn piles of brush created through site clearance activities.
