Iowa DOT message program spreads to other states

Posted: Updated:

The message boards likely catch the attention of drivers on Iowa highways, and now the idea is catching on in other states.

The Iowa Department of Transportation started Message Monday, a program that's part of its goal to have zero deaths on the roads. Every Monday, a different message appears on boards along highways.

Message Monday has now spread to Utah. The message this week in that state read, "Get your head out of your apps."

However, some drivers in Utah found the sign tasteless and crass. The DOT in Utah says it's trying to make an impact, and the overall goal is to get people talking. Like the Iowa DOT, the goal is to reduce the number of people killed on the roads.

Every week, a group in Utah comes together to create the week's message and gives credit to Iowa for giving them the idea.
