One person dies in apartment complex fire

One person is dead after a fire strikes a Charles City apartment complex.

The Charles City Fire Department responded to a report of smoke alarms sounding with smoke in the hallways of the apartment complex at 2102 Clarkview Drive in Charles City at 4:19 a.m. Tuesday morning. Initial fire units arrived on scene at 4:22 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke in the hallways, and an apartment inside the complex that had heavy smoke and heat from a fire inside.

Once inside the apartment, a victim of the smoke and fire was found and removed from the apartment. The victim was treated and transported to the hospital.The patient died at Floyd County Medical Center. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

The apartment complex has twelve apartments, and the entire complex was evacuated. The fire was contained to the single apartment where the fire started. Minor to moderate fire damage was noted inside the apartment, with moderate smoke and heat damage, and minor water damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, as the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office has been called to assist. There is no indication of foul play in the fire.
