WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Local students are collecting donations to help homeless veterans in November.

The Student Veterans of America chapter at Hawkeye Community College will be holding Operation Help a Veteran from now through November 30th.

The event's goal is to collect items to help homeless veterans and their families in the Cedar Valley.

The group is partnering with the Supportive Services for Veteran Families to provide needed items to local veterans in need. Items being sought include:

·         Bus passes

·         Coats, gloves, hats, blankets, and socks

·         Disposable hand/foot warmers

·         Gas vouchers

·         Household items such as sheets and shower curtains

·         Basic kitchen items such as pots, pans, silverware, can openers, plates, towels, cleaning supplies.

·         Toilet paper

·         Basic hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene items

A donation box is located in Hawkeye Center on Hawkeye’s Main Campus, 1501 East Orange Road, Waterloo.

Other locations in the Cedar Valley are needed for additional donation boxes.

Any businesses interested in hosting an Operation Help a Veteran donation box can call Robin Knight, Hawkeye’s military and veterans services coordinator, at 319-296-2329, ext.1212.

Monetary donations are also accepted. This supports the purchase of larger items like beds, mattresses, and other general needs once veterans and their families can be placed in housing. To contribute financial support, send donations to:
