Toughness propels Hawks and C.J. Beathard to a perfect record

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (KWWL) -

The Iowa Hawkeyes are 9-0, and they got there by playing with reckless abandon.

“This team's laying it out there,” said Kirk Ferentz following Saturday's 35-27 win at Indiana. “They're doing it every week, doing whatever it takes.”

Nobody's seemed to embody that spirit more than quarterback C.J. Beathard.

“His poise, toughness out on the field are impressive. Now it's just skyrocketed in my mind,” said Ferentz.

Clearly still hampered by a groin injury that's bugged him for much of the season, Beathard gutted out a gritty performance on Saturday, his toughness epitomized by giving up his body on a dive for the goal line late in the first half.

“I could to get in the end zone and I felt like the only way I could get in was by jumping over top,” said Beathard.

“He's a great quarterback,” added sophomore running back Akrum Wadley, “He's a dog fighting to the finish. He's not even 100 percent, but he's giving 100 percent.”

That's led to a perfect record for the Hawkeye signal caller, beginning with a win at Purdue in his only start of the 2014 season. Since that time he's gone 10-0 as Iowa's starting quarterback.

“The number one criteria you rate a quarterback on is what's his record,” said Ferentz, “how's he doing when he's in charge. It's a critical position.”

“We just follow behind everything he does,” added Wadley, “We're going as far as he takes us.”

As far as C.J. Beathard's concerned, getting where the Hawks want to go is a team effort.

“We've got a lot of team players. We're not stopping here. We want to keep winning.”
