Families celebrate Dubuque Adoption Day

Posted: Updated:

It's a celebration in the north courtroom of the Dubuque County Courthouse.

Four kids officially become members of their new families.

"It means so much, we have wanted to expand our family for years now and we heard about the foster system and that there were kids needing homes and we had a home to give," said Molly Coyle.

Molly and Tom Coyle have been foster parents to Jolee and Carlee for the past year and a half.

"It's been wonderful, it's been so nice to see Maggie become a big sister and learn to love these little girls like they are her own and it's just been wonderful to watch our family grow and develop into a family," added Coyle.

This is the first time adoption day has been held in Dubuque and there will be many more throughout the month in Iowa.

"It doesn't take a perfect family, you don't have to be perfect, you just have to want to accept another person into your family," said Christa Hefel, Iowa KidsNet post-adoption support specialist.

Adoption experts say there are many foster kids in the state that need a place to call home -- just like Jolee and Carlee Coyle did.

Other adoption day events are taking place this month in our area, including in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids.

At last count -- there are nearly 800 kids in Iowa who are eligible for adoption -- from children to teens.
