Apple files patent for "panic mode" on iPhones

Posted: Updated:

A new way to alert friends and family if you're in danger might be in the works for iPhone users.

Tech giant Apple has filed a patent for a method to secretly enter "panic mode" on an iPhone when it's unlocked with the touch of a finger.

The panic mode would alert friends and family the user might be in danger. The mode could possibly flash a light and emit a noise similar to a car alarm to deter criminals.

NBC News reached out to Apple asking if, or how, the company was planning to implement the feature, but Apple has yet to respond.
