Marion home saved from demolition, relocated

MARION (KWWL) -

Only four homes have been moved in the City of Marion in the last 15 years, so it was a sight to see today.

A large, 3 bedroom 3 bath home was moved nearly nine blocks in order to make way for a new intersection project on the busy street of 29th Avenue.

"When I first heard about it I didn't quite believe it," said Sherri Plotz, a neighbor in the area.

The home made its way around a tight corner, even being lifted at one point to dodge a mailbox.

"The truck has a hydraulic fifth wheel on it and you can raise the front," said Kevin Ferneau, Owner of Ferneau and Sons House Moving.

While it's a rare sight for others, for the Ferneau family, moving houses goes back six generations.

"I've done it for most of my life you know with my dad and brothers," said Ferneau.

Now, along with his sons, the work continues.

The home is one of two that will be moved for the intersection project in the next month.

Both homes were set for demolition until they were bought from the city.

The two homes appear to be in good shape.

"Just missing furniture, all the bedrooms are you know ready to be lived in," said Ken Spence, who purchased the homes from Marion.

The purchase saved the homes from being destroyed.

"This is a great home, why destroy it? So, I'm glad we saved one, and I'm glad that we pulled it off without a hitch and I'm glad KWWL Channel 7 came by and wants to let everyone know what's up," said Spence.

The initial project will begin in April of 2016 when a mini roundabout will be built.

City Manager Lon Pluckhaun told us the homes were sold to the city from their previous owners.

Pluckhaun says the mini roundabout wouldn't affect the two homes, but the homeowners knew a bigger intersection project would be coming in the future so they decided to sell to the city.

We are told the second home is set to be moved in about a month.
