Takata facing $70 million fine for airbags

Posted: Updated:

The Takata Corporation is being fined $70 million for not admitting some of its airbags were defective.

As previously reported, the airbags can explode and shoot metal fragments at the driver and passengers. The airbags are blamed for at least seven deaths in the United States.

More than 19 million vehicles in the U.S. have been recalled; as of last month, 23 percent of the recalled vehicles had been fixed.

As a result of the defective airbags, Honda is dumping Takata as its supplier. The Japanese automaker has announced none of its new cars in development will use Takata's airbag inflators.
