New U of Iowa president to live in leased town house for now

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- The University of Iowa has leased a town house for the new university president while the official residence is being repaired.

A university spokeswoman says a year's lease was taken on the $2,000-a-month town house for incoming President Bruce Harreld and his wife, Mary.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that an estimated $1.5 million in deferred maintenance and repairs will take most of the academic year on the 13,000-square-foot residence at 102 Church St. in Iowa City.

The living area takes up about a tenth of the space. It also has a garage, guest rooms, two large porches, a third-floor "ballroom" and a first floor that's designed for public events.
