CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

FOURTH QUARTER UPDATE:

The 20-7 score holds as the UNI Panthers improve to  4-4 on the season with a win over the South  Dakota State Coyotes.

THIRD QUARTER UPDATE:

The third frame belonged to UNI kicker and Waterloo native Michael Schmadeke, who successfully booted kicks from both 48 and 50 yards out to add to UNI's lead in the quarter. The Panthers have scored 20 unanswered points following USD's first quarter touchdown, and lead the Coyotes 20-7 as they zero in on a home  win and a .500 record.

HALFTIME UPDATE:

Today's second half held better fortunes for the UNI Panthers, specifically through a strong performance by QB Aaron Bailey. Bailey connected with Braden Lehman for a 14-yard score halfway through the quarter to tie the tilt up, and then put the hometown team on top with a 1-yard touchdown sneak to cap an 8-play, 83-yard drive at 3:32 in the quarter. Panthers pace the South Dakota Coyotes at halftime, leading 14-7.

FIRST QUARTER UPDATE:

The Panthers are down after one quarter in what's been a mostly defensive battle this afternoon in the UNI-Dome. The visiting South Dakota Coyotes were able to put together a 13-play, 81-yard drive that culminated in a 23-yard touchdown strike, standing as the only score so far.  7-0 South Dakota over Northern Iowa after quarter one.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Northern Iowa Panthers host South Dakota for just a third home game in the UNI-Dome so far this fall when the Coyotes travel to eastern Iowa this afternoon.

Both teams are near the top of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, with UNI (3-4, 1-3 Missouri Valley) ranked 18th nationally and South Dakota (4-3, 2-2 Missouri Valley) receiving votes in this week's poll, but both squads are currently in the lower half of the ultra-competitive Missouri Valley Conference and looking to gain an edge with a win Saturday.

For the Panthers, today's game marks the third home contest through eight games to start 2015, but UNI will now finish the regular season with three of its last four games at home in Cedar Falls. UNI looks for the sweep of the Mount Rushmore State this season, having beaten South Dakota State 10-7, in a gritty road performance last Saturday.

The Coyotes serve as yet another formidable opponent for the Panthers, scoring a benchmark win over North Dakota State on the road, 24-21, on October 17 to end the Bison's 26 game home winning streak -- a milestone UNI barely missed out on a week earlier in a narrow 31-28 loss on October 10 in the FargoDome. South Dakota comes in to today's contest on a two-game winning streak, having also dispatched Missouri State, 40-10, last Saturday.

UNI won the most recent match between the two MVC rivals, topping USD by a score of 27-16 in Vermillion, South Dakota last October.

This afternoon's action gets started at 1 p.m. from the UNI-Dome. Check back at kwwl.com for game updates, as well as the KWWL Facebook and Twitter feeds for live score updates.
