IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Update: Hundreds of students are evacuated from a University of Iowa dorm.

Students were told to leave the building following an early morning fire.
It was reported in the Slater Residence Hall, which is home to several Freshmen and Sophomores.

Students tell me there was a lot of confusion as they gathered outside the dorm around 1:30 Saturday morning.
Students weren't sure whether it was a drill or an actual fire.

"They were telling everyone to move back and someone from the 9th floor said yea there is a lot of smoke and flames. its real," said dorm resident Emily Blair.

Firefighters contained the fire to one room on the ninth floor, making students on other floors think it was a prank.

"We were all just kind of like no there's not, there's no fire and he was like no there actually is a fire,," said dorm resident Elizabeth Consolati.

"Students evacuated from Slater were then sent across the street to an other residents hall where they waited for several hours.
"Eventually, around 3:00 a.m. they let us back," said Blair.

Smoke and water damaged several dorm floors.
Windows were open in rainy, 50 degree weather, Saturday, to air out the smell of smoke.
Because of the damage, students on floors eight & nine had to stay with friends for the night.

"Our room was a little wet from the sprinkles and they said that they were going to do the best they can to pick it up for us," said Consolati.

No one was injured during the fire.
Students said the evacuation went smoothly, as they already had a drill earlier this year.
According to officials, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

An overnight fire evacuated a residence hall on the campus of the University of Iowa early Saturday morning, according to the Iowa City Fire Department.

The fire broke out on the ninth floor of Slater Residence Hall along Grand Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The fire department says everyone got out of the building safely, while crews contained the fire to a single room and had the blaze extinguished within 15 minutes of arrival.

The extent of damage isn't yet known but is not believed to be major. Two students are currently displaced as a result of the early morning blaze.
