College Aid: President to extend Pell grants to some high school students

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of low-income students will be eligible to get federal Pell education grants to take college courses while still in high school.

It's part of an experimental program announced Friday by the Obama administration. The Education Department says it will invest up to $20 million in the 2016-2017 school year -- helping up to 10,000 students.

High school students who take college courses through "dual enrollment" programs will be eligible. The programs allow the high school students to take classes at a local college, often earning college credit.

It's the latest expansion of the Pell program. In July, the administration announced a pilot program to extend Pell money to some federal and state prisoners who will be able to take college courses while still behind bars.
