2 more guards plead guilty in drug inquiry at Iowa prison

Posted: Updated:

ANAMOSA, Iowa (AP) -- Two former tower guards at the Anamosa prison have pleaded guilty to state drug charges as part of an investigation into misconduct by correctional officers.

Marques Maryland pleaded guilty last week to possession of a controlled substance, and Seth Vogel entered a written guilty plea to that charge Wednesday.

Maryland was sentenced to two days in jail and a $315 fine, and Vogel is expected to receive the same punishment under terms of a plea agreement.

Two other former guards at the Anamosa State Penitentiary have pleaded guilty to federal charges in the case. At least nine employees have resigned or been fired.

Investigators say guards used and traded marijuana and prescription drugs, and at least one smuggled cell phones inside the prison to inmates in exchange for cash.
