China to end its one-child policy

(CNN) -

China has decided to end its decade-old "one-child policy".

Chinese state-run media reports that the country will now let couples have no more than two children.

The country created the "one couple, one child" policy in the 1970s to control population growth.

Critics say the policy caused some government officials to resort to abortions, forced sterilization, and adoptions.

China says this new change is a "proactive response to the issue of an aging population."

Beijing has already warned the country could have more than 400 million people over the age of 60 in it by 2030.
