Women seek to change hair braiding law

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Two women file a lawsuit in hopes of changing a state law.

In order to braid hair in Iowa., you must have a state cosmetology license.

That involves more than 2,000 hours of training from an Iowa school, which can cost thousands of dollars. However, the women say cosmetology schools don't teach braiding and therefore shouldn't require a license.

They're suing the state cosmetology board.

"I just want to work and make a living for my family and to teach braiding and to be able to give back to my community," said Aicheria Bell, entrepreneur. "I'm not trying to not pay taxes or break any laws, I just want to live."

This same issue has come up during the past two legislative sessions but failed to reach the Governor's desk.
