WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Let's say you're allergic to cats, the weather is cold, and you live in Iowa.

That's a recipe for unwanted house guests like mice.

Just like people need coats to stay warm outside, mice need to be covered too.

It only takes a dime-sized hole for a mouse to find it's way in your home.

Michael Garrett with Aable Pest Control does routine checks at homes in Waterloo.

He knows everything there is to know about mice.

"Mice constantly need to gnaw to keep their teeth from growing, or it'll grow into it's jaw," said Garrett.

At Ted's Hardware Store in Evansdale, mouse traps fly off the shelves during the cold weather months.

"They eat through everything," said manager Nate Gehrke, "pretty much everything they can get into."

Any of your garden variety traps will work, but if you want to go the humane route, take a walk around your home and check for holes.

Or....get a cat.

Mouse droppings carry dangerous pathogens that carry disease, so if you see them in your home, call an exterminator.
