Holiday jobs outlook for eastern Iowa

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Industry analysts predict about 750,000 jobs will be added this holiday season, and that means many businesses in the eastern Iowa are hiring.

"Seasonal jobs are a great place to get started.  There's some good ones out there for people who are already working and want to make some extra money for the holiday season," said operations manager with IowaWORKS Northeast Iowa, Marla Loecke.

The US Post Office is adding nearly 300 seasonal jobs throughout eastern and central Iowa with pay ranging from $12 to $16.65 an hour.  They're holding a job fair for the upcoming holiday season on Nov. 7th in Windsor Heights at the Hawkeye District Office.

Retail businesses are also hiring.  Analysts say there will be an uptick in retail sales this year, so that means there are plenty of open positions.

"There's really jobs out there for seasonal work that are in any type of field also, retails obviously one of them," added Loecke.

Local retailer, Thiesens, says it has filled most of its seasonal positions, but, is still hiring.

And Nordstrom says its hiring for  about 900 full and part-time at its fulfillment center in Cedar Rapids.

Experts say these temp jobs can become permanent. "There's always that potential, some of them will say seasonal through a certain time period...the job market is really good right now, so if employers really like somebody, there's always a chance that job won't be open...but maybe something else will within that company or business," said Loecke.
