GOP leaders try to sell debt, budget deal with President Obama

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congressional leaders are throwing their collective weight behind a hard-won, bipartisan fiscal plan designed to avert a looming government debt crisis and forestall a government shutdown in December.

The pact, which would cover the 2016-17 fiscal years, represents one last agreement between President Barack Obama and departing House Speaker John Boehner. Whether it lifts off or crashes and burns politically depends in large part on the reception it gets from restive House Republicans, including the arch-conservatives who forced Boehner out.

The emerging framework which emerged late Monday would give both the Pentagon and domestic agencies two years of budget relief of $80 billion in exchange for cuts elsewhere in the budget.
