Clayton County board questions auditor about late budget

Posted: Updated:

ELKADER, Iowa (AP) -- Clayton County supervisors have questioned the county auditor about late budget work and reports.

The board had Dennis Freitag placed under oath on Monday and asked about unfinished work on the fiscal 2015 budget year, which ended June 30, and about reports that hadn't been sent to the county's outside auditing firm.

Freitag has been working from home to care for his ailing wife, and he told the supervisors that they should be questioning his chief deputy auditor. He accused board members of badgering him by repeatedly asking the same questions.

Supervisor Larry Gibbs says the issue is not Freitag or his wife. Rather, he says, "It's about what we need to run the county."

Gibbs says supervisors will consult with the county attorney before deciding their next step.
